Week in gaming: exploit ban-happiness edition

Microsoft has begun issuing temporary bans to players taking advantage of an exploit in Modern Warfare 2, while Infinity Ward works on a patch to fix the issue. While the servers may be kept slightly cleaner for the efforts, the amount of control Microsoft holds over owners of their consoles, and the arbitrary way they are able to wield it, is troubling.

With many platforms and little oversight, clones ..read more

Holiday apps that’ll make your Grinchmas merry

My wife is probably one of the biggest Grinch fans out there. Yes, we have Grinch holiday decorations and end up watching the movies several times throughout the holiday season. We’re sitting at 3 times already… I’m praying we don’t pass 5. It’s not that I don’t like The Grinch — the animated or Jim Carey version — I’m usually not a multiple viewing kind of guy.

To help fuel her love — or obsession — the ..read more

Preview: Super Meat Boy

Super Meat Boy is already a success story. Thousands of free games hit Newgrounds every year, and for Meat Boy to rise above them all to be super-remade into a WiiWare/PC retail product is an achievement in itself. I haven’t heard of a Newgrounds success story this big since Alien Hominid went retail on the GameCube/Xbox/PS2 all those years ago.

Team Meat has been working for over a year now, long before New Super Mario Bros. Wii blew the doors off ..read more

All Hail The iPod Touch

As the competition for smart phone domination starts to heat up, it is becoming increasingly clear that the iPod Touch is Apple’s ace-up-its-sleeve, and according to a report by Flurry, a San Francisco-based mobile analytics company, 24 million iPod Touches represent about 40 percent of the total 58 million iPhone OS devices.

From the time I first laid my hands on the iPod Touch, I have been a big fan of the device – after all it is just like an ..read more

Hallmark presents Galaga arcade ornament

While Hallmark is a giant, soulless, holiday creating corporation there are sometimes benefits to their existence. For instance their ornament selection is vast. If you’re interested in it you can pretty much get it in ornament form from Hallmark; that includes retro gaming. This year Hallmark has introduced a Galaga arcade cabinet ornament for your Christmas tree decorating enjoyment.

It doesn’t just hang, though. This thing is a fully interactive ornament that plays the new game theme from Galaga and makes ..read more

How PC gamers can be heard (hint: not by threats of piracy)

Have you ever met a PC gamer in person? Your experiences may be different than mine, but they tend to resemble normal human beings. Some may even live in your very home. Most of my friends are PC gamers, and they buy their games, have fun playing online, and go about their lives. None of them resemble the skulking, insane caricatures seen in chat rooms, gaming blogs, and ..read more
