GDC 2010: Hands-on with Sketch Nation Shooter

Filed under: Gaming, Software, Apple, Developer

When I was reminded of its name at GDC, I couldn’t recall hearing much about Engineous Games. It’s the development studio founded by Nitzan Wilnai, a former software developer at EA and Yahoo who’s gone to work making iPhone games for himself. But I did recall Engenious’ first title, Tatomic, which I wrote about a while ago — it was a great puzzler that put a new spin on Tetris’ falling block gameplay.

Unfortunately, despite my ..read more

Filed under: Multimedia, Internet Tools, iTunes, iPhone, Music

The problem is, we just don’t know where they’re going. In a Saturday blog post, the company announced it is “…taking a new direction” and won’t be offering their current apps to new users.

SimplifyMedia has been offering free software for computer-to-computer and iPhone-to-computer music sharing over the internet. Using the iPhone app, you could connect to your computer at home and stream albums, playlists or songs without any complicated firewall setups. A newer ..read more

Checking in from Samana Bay, Dominican Republic, aboard the M/S Regatta

It seems that a lot of Apple-related events happen while I’m on cruise ships. Back in 1998, for example, I was aboard a cruise ship when I read the headline that Apple had decided to drop the Newton MessagePad. Before we went on this trip, I knew that Apple would start taking iPad pre-orders and reservations on March 12, so I expected that I’d just be able to pull up the Apple website early in the morning, pop ..read more

GDC 2010: Hands-on with Faraway

Filed under: Gaming, Software, Developer, iPhone, App Store, iPad

Steph Thirion’s first iPhone game was Eliss, a touchscreen-based arcade game that had you combining and maneuvering planets around one another, and trying to size-match them up with black holes to earn points. As he told us (stay tuned for an exclusive interview with the indie developer), it was pretty hard — even more so than he actually intended it to be. So, for his second iPhone game, Faraway, he’s gone much ..read more

Count The Beats: Inspiration… two apps for the musician on the move

Filed under: Multimedia, Software, iPhone, App Store, Music

Recently I’ve been preparing to move home and finally did last weekend. Naturally I had to pack up all my musical gear, equipment and of course, my Mac. In the week leading up to the move, I’ve had my iPhone and nothing else. With no creative outlet and the pressure of looming project deadlines, I found myself scouting the app store for a fix to help me start fleshing out a few creative ..read more

eBooks outnumber games in the App Store

The number of eBooks in the App Store has surpassed the number of games for the first time, and the spread is widening. Mobclix, a mobile device advertising agency, reports that as of last month, there were over 27,000 eBook apps while games were relegated to the runner-up position of 25,400 apps. Over the last reported month, new introductions of eBook apps more than doubled that of games (158 eBook versus 71 game apps). ..read more

Steph Tirion, creator of Eliss, annouces Faraway

Filed under: Gaming, Software, Developer, iPhone, App Store, SDK

Steph Tirion is an excellent game designer who I’ve had the good fortune to meet a few times. He first released a great game called Eliss on the App Store and he’s now announced the second game he’s been working on, called Faraway. Eliss was a terrific little arcade game that made great use of the iPhone’s touchscreen, and Tirion says that while his first game dealt with “planets and space management ..read more

How to: Get your 1984 Mac running Snow Leopard

Filed under: OS, Cult of Mac, Mods

It couldn’t happen, they said. It wouldn’t work, they warned. But gmjhowe over at Instructables did it anyway: he converted his old 1984 Macintosh into a machine that could run Snow Leopard. And he laid out some pretty good instructions on how to do so yourself. His two rules are as thus: don’t hurt the old Mac in any way — besides its value as a collector’s item, the thing still looks great. And ..read more
