Wi-Fi Stumblers Disappear from Apple App Store

We wrote repeatedly about Apple’s odd and often unfair application approval process. Instead of fixing it, Apple is just getting weirder and weirder about what apps are allowed in the store. The latest example is the sudden disappearance of several Wi-Fi stumbler applications from the app store.

Cult of Mac noticed that Apple has removed apps such as WiFi-Where, WiFiFoFum and yFy Network Finder. These apps scan Wi-Fi networks in the vicinity, which is not very different from simply going ..read more

Phishing Returns to Twitter Via Direct Message [WARNING]

Another wave of Twitter phishing has erupted this afternoon, with a spat of direct messages that read “somebody wrote something about you in this blog here” with a link to an ominous short URL.

That short URL asks users to login to Twitter, but one look at your browser’s address bar indicates that it is not Twitter you’re logging into, but a third-party site that looks like Twitter. Once you provide said site with your login details, it DMs ..read more

According to Financial Times, U.S. officials have tracked down the authors of the malicious code used against Google in the recent attack.

First, U.S. investigators narrowed down the launch of the program to computers inside two educational institutions in China. Now, they’ve found a hacker, a “freelance security consultant in his 30s”, who wrote a part of the code that exploited a security hole in Internet Explorer, and was ultimately used to break into computers of Google employees. Shazam and Last.fm Team Up for More Music Magic on iPhone

One of the first big “wow” apps for the iPhone was Shazam — hold up your phone to the radio or TV and BAM, find out what song is playing. Likewise, the Last.fm iPhone app was one of the first apps in the App Store for music fans. Today Shazam and Last.fm are partnering to bring features from both services together. When Shazam launched its premium versions, Shazam Encore and (SHAZAM)RED, last fall, it was unclear if the new ..read more

The Top 10 Twitter Trends This Week [CHART]

Twitter was abuzz this week with chatter about the iPad, performances at The GRAMMYs and relief efforts in Haiti.

Some of the top trends were predictable (Mashable’s Ben Parr successfully guessed at four of the ten last week), while others were unexpected.

The tendency for Twitter users to sign off with “Goodnight” has made that a top topic this week, while the “Retweet If” meme gathered momentum. Meanwhile, the Super Bowl is the dominant topic today, although these stats were compiled ..read more

Happy 6th Birthday, Facebook!

According to Wikipedia and their Info page, Facebook was launched exactly six years ago, on February 4, 2004. Back then it was called “Thefacebook“, and it was originally located at thefacebook.com, but it’s definitely the same project.

Founded by Mark Zuckerberg, together with his college roomies Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes, Facebook was originally intended to be a network only for Harvard students, but was later expanded to other universities and finally to everyone.
